Argentina and Canada met in the very first group stage matchup of this tournament back on June 20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. While Argentina wasn’t terribly pleased with the conditions of the grass in Atlanta, it was able to rise above and dominate the match against Canada, winning 2-0.

Argentina dominated in time of possession, posting a 64.4% mark to just 35.6% for Canada. In addition, Albiceleste had a 19-to-10 margin in shot attempts, with nine shots on target, to just two for Canada. Both sides had a pair of yellow cards, while Argentina was far more aggressive with 15 fouls, to just nine for Canada. Argentina also managed to get seven corners, while Canada had four.

Julian Alvarez opened the scoring at 49′, while Lautaro Martinez added a goal for good measure at 88′ to put the match out of reach. Lautaro Martinez leads the team with four goals, while Lisando Martinez and Alvarez have the other goals for Argentina. Lionel Messi has yet to score in three matches, and he misfired on a penalty kick in the team’s victory in the quarterfinals over Ecuador.

Emiliano Martinez kept a clean sheet in all three group stage matchups against Canada, Chile and Peru. He was beaten at 90’+1′ by Kevin Rodriguez, but he rebounded to outduel Ecuador 4-2 on penalties.

Canada ousted Venezuela in the quarters, outlasting the Group B table toppers 4-3 on penalties. The story was Jacob Shaffelburg’s goal at 13′, just the second goal in four matches for the Canucks. It has been outscored 3-2 in four matches, including the 2-0 setback to Argentina. Jonathan David is the only other goal scorer for Canada, as he helped his nation to a 1-0 victory over Peru. Shaffelburg notched the assist on David’s goal, giving him two of the team’s three points to date.

Canada had gotten this far by playing suffocating defense, while Maxime Crepeau has managed two clean sheets, while lifting his team past Venezuela in the extra session. He has allowed three goals, making 16 saves in his four appearances to date.

Heading into the semifinals, it’s hard not to back Argentina. Albiceleste has lost just twice in the past five years, and that’s why the public is backing Argentina at a feverish pace. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Argentina repeat its performance from the opening match, winning 2-0, this time in New Jersey. Canada just doesn’t have the scoring punch to keep up with the defending World Cup champions. Martinez has been automatic in goal, and it is unlikely he faces much more than a bother from the Canadian side. He barely had to break a sweat in the opening match.
